Symptoms

  • No warning until failure — this is a silent destroyer
  • Hard starting in cold conditions when follower is badly worn
  • High-pressure fuel pump fault codes
  • In failure: car won't start, cam lobe destroyed

Root Cause

Identical to Golf Mk5 issue — the PD fuel pump actuator uses a cam follower that VAG failed to adequately specify for longevity. The follower wears through its coating and into the metal.

How To Fix

  1. Inspect follower every 20,000 miles — access via 10mm bolt on HPFP top
  2. Remove HPFP cover, check follower for wear groove with a torch
  3. If grooved or worn flat: replace for £15-30 (Bosch, Elring or OEM)
  4. If camshaft lobe is damaged: cam replacement £800-1,500
  5. This is the #1 pre-purchase check on ALL VAG 2.0 TDI PD engines
