Symptoms

  • Coolant loss without external leak
  • White smoke on startup
  • Rough idle and hesitation
  • P0401 EGR fault codes
  • Smell of coolant from engine bay

Root Cause

The EGR cooler corrodes internally. Combined with the EGR valve carbonising, this becomes a double failure. The coolant leak into the intake can cause misfires and carbon build-up in the valves.

How To Fix

  1. Replace EGR cooler (BMW part or quality OEM equivalent)
  2. Clean or replace EGR valve at same time
  3. Flush intake manifold
  4. Change coolant with BMW LL coolant specification
  5. Total repair: £600-1,200 at specialist
