Symptoms

  • Flat spot under acceleration, especially 2,000-3,500 RPM
  • Hissing noise under hard acceleration
  • P0299 underboost code
  • Turbo spools up but boost doesn't arrive

Root Cause

The plastic boost pipes and rubber joiners deteriorate with age and heat. The clamps loosen over time. On turbo-charged small engines the pressure differential is high and any weakness in the plumbing causes a noticeable power loss.

How To Fix

  1. With engine running, feel along all boost pipes for escaping air under acceleration
  2. Common failure points: elbow at throttle body, pipe to intercooler, turbo outlet
  3. Silicone replacement hoses available for £30-80 (more durable than OEM plastic)
  4. Fix is usually DIY: hose clamps and replacement pipes
