Symptoms

  • Loud whining or screeching from engine bay
  • Loss of power and boost pressure
  • Blue smoke on acceleration
  • Oil found in intercooler or air intake
  • P0299 underboost code

Root Cause

Oil sludge from infrequent oil changes blocks the turbo oil feed pipe. Bearings starved of oil fail rapidly. The turbo shaft can then contact the housing, causing catastrophic failure.

How To Fix

  1. Check oil feed pipe before replacing turbo — may simply be blocked
  2. Check shaft play: grab compressor wheel and test for radial play
  3. Turbo replacement: remanufactured unit £300-600, new OEM £800+
  4. Always flush oil system and use fresh oil when fitting a new turbo
  5. Fitted cost at indie: £500-1,000
