Honda's first in-house diesel engine. Incredibly smooth and reliable, though plagued by slipping clutches and exhaust manifold cracks.

What To Check Before Buying

  • Check service history — was oil changed regularly?
  • Look for blue/black smoke on startup and under load
  • Listen for rattles, knocking, or turbo whine
  • Test all electrics including windows, AC, and central locking
  • Check for DPF warning light or recent regenerations
  • Inspect for rust underneath and around wheel arches
  • Request a pre-purchase inspection by an independent mechanic

Exhaust Manifold Cracking

A very well-known issue on Honda's 2.2 diesel. The steel exhaust manifold cracks, leaking toxic exhaust fumes directly into the cabin vents.

Premature Clutch Slipping

Despite being a brilliant engine, the clutch fitted to the 2.2 i-CTDi cannot handle the 340Nm of torque. It slips prematurely, especially in 4th, 5th, and 6th gears.
