Mazda Mazda6 Mk2 2.2D — Oil Pickup Strainer Blockage and Engine Seizure
A fatal flaw in the Mazda 2.2 MZR-CD engine. Injector seals leak, allowing carbon into the oil sump which blocks the oil pickup strainer. The engine then seizes from oil starvation.

OBD Codes
P0524Injectors
Typical layout and location for the Injectors assembly.
Symptoms
- Red low oil pressure warning light flashes or stays on
- Tapping or knocking noise from engine (often too late at this point)
- EML light and limp mode
Root Cause
Copper seals at the base of the fuel injectors degrade. Exhaust combustion gases blow past the seals into the engine block, carrying soot. This soot drops into the oil sump, coagulates, and blocks the mesh strainer on the oil pump pickup.
How To Fix
- PREVENTION: If you buy this car, immediately drop the sump, clean the strainer, and replace the injector copper seals (£300 job).
- If the oil light has already come on and the engine knocks, the engine is usually scrap due to spun crank bearings.
- Replacement engine cost: £2,000+

Other Faults on This Variant
Air Conditioning Condenser Leak (Stone Damage)
MinorThe air conditioning condenser is mounted at the very front of the cooling pack, making it highly susceptible to stone damage from the road, leading to refrigerant loss.
Front Anti-Roll Bar Drop Link Wear
MinorThe front anti-roll bar drop links wear out on heavily potholed UK roads, causing an annoying knocking sound at low speeds.
Alternator / Smart Charge System Failure
SevereModern vehicles use smart charging systems to reduce engine load, but the complex regulators on the alternators frequently fail.
