Symptoms

  • Rattling from engine on cold start, louder in cold weather
  • EML with timing chain correlation codes
  • Loss of power and misfires
  • In catastrophic failure: engine stops, cannot be restarted
  • Metallic noise from top of engine

Root Cause

The N14 uses a plastic single-vane timing chain tensioner that loses tension as it wears. The chain then slaps against the guides. Combined with carbon build-up on the intake valves (direct injection + PCV system), the engine suffers from multiple compounding issues.

How To Fix

  1. Replace timing chain, tensioner, guides and sprockets as a complete kit
  2. Also check for oil leaks from valve cover — refit gasket at same time
  3. Carbon clean intake valves while the engine is partially disassembled
  4. Genuine BMW Mini parts for this — pattern parts have been known to fail prematurely
  5. Total repair: £1,000-1,800 at a specialist
