Vauxhall Astra Astra J 1.6 CDTi 110bhp — Timing Chain Rattle and Tensioner Failure
The 1.6 CDTi A16DTH/DTJ engine is notorious for timing chain noise and failure, often from as low as 60,000 miles. This is the most serious known fault on the Astra J diesel.

OBD Codes
P0008P0016P0017Timing Chain
Typical layout and location for the Timing Chain assembly.
Symptoms
- Rattling or chain whipping sound on cold start from top of engine
- Noise usually present only when cold, disappears as oil pressure builds
- EML light with P0008, P0016 or P0017
- In severe cases: loss of power, timing jumping, engine won't start
- Metallic debris in oil
Root Cause
The A16DTH engine uses a timing chain with a hydraulically actuated tensioner. The tensioner relies on oil pressure — on cold starts there is a brief moment of low pressure. Combined with stretched chains and worn guides, this causes the characteristic rattle. Many examples were allowed to deteriorate too long before repair.
How To Fix
- Do not drive the car if you hear the rattle — a jumped chain can bend valves
- Confirm with OBD codes P0016/P0017 (cam/crank correlation)
- Full timing chain kit replacement — chain, tensioners, guides, VVT actuator (if applicable)
- Oil and filter change on reassembly with quality 5W-30 synthetic
- This job requires engine timing tools (available on loan from Halfords)
- Labour: 6-8 hours. Total cost: £800-1,500

Other Faults on This Variant
Clutch Pedal Sticking Down
SevereThe clutch pedal fails to return to the top of its travel, often getting stuck halfway or hitting the floor completely.
DPF Blockage and Regeneration System Failure
SevereDPF blockage is extremely common on the Astra J 1.6 CDTi. The engine's tendency to get stuck in failed regen cycles results in diesel contaminating the engine oil — a serious secondary issue.
EGR Cooler Failure and Intake Contamination
SevereEGR cooler failure on the Astra J 1.6 CDTi causes coolant loss and in severe cases, coolant enters the intake manifold. This is a more serious failure than a simple EGR valve block.
