Symptoms

  • Sudden loss of power (limp mode) during hard acceleration or climbing hills
  • Power returns to normal after restarting the engine
  • P0234 Overboost fault code
  • Whistling noise from turbo

Root Cause

Carbon from the exhaust builds up on the variable vanes inside the turbo. When accelerating, the ECU commands the vanes to move, but they stick, causing the turbo to produce too much boost. The ECU detects this and cuts fuel to protect the engine.

How To Fix

  1. Confirm VNT actuator arm is stiff or seized by moving it manually
  2. 'Mr Muscle' oven cleaner trick: inject into exhaust side to dissolve carbon (DIY fix, temporary)
  3. Professional turbo removal and chemical clean
  4. Turbo replacement if bearings are worn (£500-900)
