Nissan Qashqai J10 1.5 dCi 106bhpDPF Blockage and Sensor Failure

DPF issues on the J10 Qashqai are common because many are used as school-run and short-trip vehicles — exactly the wrong driving profile for a diesel with a DPF.

Symptoms

  • DPF warning light on dashboard
  • Power reduction and limp mode
  • Engine oil level rising (diesel contamination from failed regen)
  • Black smoke
  • P2453 or P2454 pressure sensor codes

Root Cause

Soot accumulates in the DPF during short cold trips. Passive and active regeneration both require higher temperatures and RPM than typical urban use provides. A blocked DPF can contaminate engine oil with diesel fuel from failed regens.

How To Fix

  1. Check engine oil dipstick — if it smells of diesel or is above max, change oil immediately
  2. Attempt forced regen via OBD (Consult software or generic EOBD)
  3. Professional DPF clean: £200-350 (removes and pressure cleans)
  4. If ash content too high, replacement required: £400-900
  5. Consider changing to a petrol Qashqai if urban use is predominant
