Skoda Octavia Mk2 2.0 TDI 140bhp PDAir Conditioning Compressor Failure

The Sanden/Sanden-style variable displacement AC compressors used on the Mk2 Octavia are notoriously weak. The internal swash plate seizes.

Severity

Moderate

Est. Cost

£500–£900

OBD Codes

None

Symptoms

  • AC blows warm air
  • No 'click' or change in engine RPM when AC is turned on
  • Metallic grinding noise from the auxiliary belt area
  • Metal shavings found inside the AC lines

Root Cause

Internal mechanical failure of the compressor. The central bolt on the compressor pulley often unscrews itself as a safety mechanism when the internals seize.

How To Fix

  1. Check the central bolt on the AC pulley — if it's sticking out or missing, the compressor is dead.
  2. DO NOT just fit a new compressor. The system MUST be flushed to remove metal shavings, and the condenser and expansion valve replaced.
  3. If you don't flush it, the new compressor will die in 2 weeks.
  4. Total cost: £500-900
