Symptoms
- Rattling noise from engine bay on cold start
- Engine stops suddenly while driving
- Car won't restart, engine turns over very quickly (loss of compression)
Root Cause
Infrequent oil changes block the small oil feed hole to the hydraulic chain tensioner. The chain runs slack, jumps a tooth, and snaps.
How To Fix
Preventative: Replace chain every 70,000 miles (£400). If it snaps: The rocker arms are designed to break to save the valves, but the cylinder head must come off to replace them. Cost if snapped: £800-1,200.
