Symptoms

  • EML warning light
  • Reduced power / limp mode
  • Rough idle and hesitation
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • White or black smoke
  • OBD codes P0400, P0401 or P1401

Root Cause

The EGR system recirculates exhaust gases back into the intake to reduce NOx emissions. Over time, carbon from the exhaust coats the valve and intake manifold, eventually causing the valve to stick. Worse on city-driven cars.

How To Fix

  1. Remove EGR valve — usually 2 bolts and one electrical connector on this engine
  2. Soak in EGR/carb cleaner for 30 minutes and scrub with a brush
  3. Clean the intake manifold passages with carb cleaner and long pipe brushes
  4. Refit or replace valve — OEM Fiat/Vauxhall £120, pattern from £40
  5. Consider fitting an EGR blanking plate (note: may cause MOT failure if lambda checked)
